Dodge Charger

This isnt the General Lee that the Duke brothers drove around in. The new Dodge Charger is built on the same chassis as the other LX cars (300, Magnum - discontinued, and the Challenger - taking the place of the Magnum). While it does sport four front headlamps that is about the only thing the new Charger has in common with the storied muscle car from the 60s and 70s. The 2006 Charger sports front grill that is canted forward giving it a mean stance, four doors, rear wheel drive, and a whole lot of horsepower.

Engine options for the Charger start at a 2.7L V6 (178 hp and 190 lb.-ft. of torque) as the base engine in the SE model. In addition to the 2.7L a 3.5L High Output V6 (250 horsepower and 250 lb.-ft. of torque) for the SXT, the 5.7L V8 Hemi with MDS (340 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque) in the RT and the SRT has a 6.1L Hemi V8 (425 hp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque). Available transmissions are a four speed automatic and a 5 speed automatic with autostick. The Charger equipped with the V6 will produce high teens in city and mid twenties on the highway for fuel efficiency. A person buying either V8 can expect mid teens and low 20s respectively.

The unique characteristics of the Charger make it ideal for use in law enforcement. Along with the Magnum the Charger has been added to the fleets for many precints. Upon evaluation for police vehicles both the Charger and the Magnum met or exceeded the criteria for being picked. The metrics measured were:

• Top Speed: Dodge Charger 5.7-liter HEMI posted best-in-class top speed of over 145 mph
• Acceleration: Dodge Charger 5.7-liter HEMI and Dodge Magnum 5.7-liter HEMI posted first and second place in acceleration times (0 - 100 mph in 16.24 seconds and 16.49 seconds, respectively)
• Vehicle Dynamics: Dodge Charger 5.7-liter HEMI and Dodge Magnum 5.7-liter HEMI posted first and second place in vehicle dynamics testing (average lap times of 1:37.96 and 1:38.26, respectively)
