I think the new cummins engines going into the dakota and durango would be a good fit for the grand cherokee as well.  Anyone else?

I can't wait for the new engines.  Dodge should find a way to fit those into every vehicle in their line up.

My only beef is that they're a V style engine.  I know every truckhead out there wants to say they have a V8 but the inline engines perform better and last way way longer.  Cummins should've taken the I6 and just cut a couple cylinders off the end as they're small engine.  To answer the question, yes - I think that every SUV in the chrysler line up should get these engines.  Less oil we use the better.

While I agree with this in principle, I don't think it's that big a deal.  If you do the regularly scheduled maintenance on your V8 it'll last you over 200k miles pretty easily.  That's more miles than most people will own a vehicle.  If you plan on owning the truck longer than that you probably should look into the I6 cummins as an option.  You'd have the truck for so long that the extra cost of the I6 wouldn't make that big of a difference.

I've read from a few cummins sites that the V6 will indeed be going into the grand cherokee and probably the commander  Grin  The reason for the V style is so that the engines will fit into the smaller vehicles.  An inline is too dang tall to fit into the grand cherokee or something like the durango or aspen.  This is good news all around  Cheesy

That's good news.  Jeeps would really benefit from the low end torque that the diesels have.  Since the V6 is small enough to fit into a Cherokee it'll be interesting to see if it makes its way to the charger, the 300, or the challenger.  It would probably get mid 30s for mpg in those cars.

Diesel is what we need right now in this country.  Gas is still pretty cheap compared to overseas.  But they pay a lot more in taxes.  They also drive cars that get closer to 50+ mpg and a lot are diesels.  It's the way of the future until fuel cells can be used, and it's a much better choice than E85.

Won't the diesel weigh too much for it to be a good off roading vehicle?

Most jeeps these days aren't used as off road vehicles.  They just use em for highway driving, never see a dirt road.  So they don't need to worry about the weight.  The only jeep that still does what the original jeep was intended to do is the wrangler.

They also carry a premium price tag for the 'jeep' name.  There's a reason that the only line of vehicle still in production from the AMC buyout is the Jeep.

I imagine that the V6 cummins will make it's way over to the LX cars as well.  By 2013 you'll see the charger, challenger, and 300 with that diesel option and they'll be getting mid 30s for mpg at least while still having good acceleration.
