Could it be that a lot of the people saying high teens or low 20s for mileage have a few thousand in mods?

Yes, many people that you find on forum sites are really into their vehilces and mod them.  I'd still say that 99% of them just go by the overhead because they think it's accurate.  Most of them say that it is.  Mine isn't that's for dang sure.

That's probably part of it.  But I also know that people always talk up their new vehicle like it's the best one ever made.  I think it's kind of a way for them to reaffirm their purchase.  I've talked to a lot of new car owners and most of them exaggerate everything from HP to 0-60 to mileage to safety ratings.  It must be the new car smell messing with their brain.

more info:

Quote
From someone who saw it in person: “In Sport and Laramie trim levels, it even has a stitched dash that you'd swear is leather! Think new Super Duty in terms of style and sophistication. It has a coil sprung rear axle for a better ride with the same payload capacity. 375 hp from the new 5.7 Hemi, with better mileage. No more Mega Cab; traditional, quad, and four-door crew cab now. Crew cab has a 5 foot 3 inch bed, built into the sides and accessed from outside the bed are two locking, waterproof, hinged access doors to 8 cubic feet of storage on each side of the bed. The look is evolutionary; same grill, but canted inwards toward the bottom like the Charger. The hood bows down towards the headlights more now, so it’s more sleek but still has the unmistakeable Ram-ness to it.”

Sounds like this is going to be a hard truck to beat.  I wonder what the doors will look like that you use to access the storage around the bed.

Not quite the hp of the tundra, but that doesn't matter as much as torque.  Besides, I bet they'll use the extra power to get better mileage.  They won't have the most HP, but they will have the best mileage is my guess.

They better.  Some of the guys at work were driving Rams and now they're in new superduties.  Those things have nice interior and Dana rear ends.  Diamler dropped the ball with the Ram, the new one is going to be great, but it might be a bit late.

My 02 seemed pretty revolutionary at the time.  It didn't define the truck world like the 94 Ram did, but it was a big step up.  I don't think they dropped the ball, they just got the redesign intervals at a bad time when a lot of competitors have redone their trucks.

What they needed to do is give it a new interior.  No one has really been complaining about how it looked on the outside.  The interior could be done with better leather and not plastic on the dash, maybe some better floor mats or something like that.  It's not that hard.

The interior of all the chrysler vehicles has been lackluster of late.  Even the expensive ones are a step below their competitors.  Diamler seems to be in the dark in terms of interior, either that or they intentionally kept the chrysler line at a lower standard so that people would be turned on to mercedes more.  Either way they're idiots.

Who knows what diamler was thinking.  Dr. Z might be charismatic, but I know that he took a company that was making money, drained the cash reserves and just started to turn out as many models as they could make money on as cheaply as they could produce them.  I'm amazed that mercedes still sell well under the management of Dr. Z...

It's easy to take a crap on diamler for chrysler's downfall in the past 10 years.  But chrysler got good transmissions out of the deal, without that I wouldn't be buying a chrysler and I doubt many people would.  The only thing I fault diamler with is selling off chrysler at the first sign of instability.

I'll agree with that.  The transmissions for chrysler vehicles required special maintenance at regular intervals.  With that they would last a long time, my father in law traded in his 95 chrysler LHS with 270k miles on it in all on the same transmission.  The problem was that too many people wouldn't do maintenance on the tranny and then get pissed when it failed.
