Well, this would have made Sir Edmund Hillary's life a lot easier. You've heard about the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited setting sales records - now some climbers adventurers made it to the top of the world’s highest volcano, by driving up in two Jeep Wrangler Unlimited vehicles and setting a new Guinness World Record in the process. Overcoming hurricane-force winds, temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius, and the thin air, the two Jeeps crossed razor-sharp ice shards and glacier fields climbed 6,646 meters (21,804) to the rim of Ojos del Salado in Chile. The vehicles carried a team from Extrem Events from Germany, led by Mattias Jeschke, who kept a diary of the climb. “I always say: Fear is my best friend whatever I do. It sharpens your senses and protects you from bad luck. I felt fear again…. tremendous fear,” Jeschke wrote. But Jeschke was amazed at the capabilities of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, which succeeded where other vehicles had failed. “The Jeep® broke through the ice, drove out again and forward! We were cheering at each other via transmitter. This morning, no one would have believed in being able to cross the glacier this way. We even did not have to use the crossing aids. Not even! The Wranglers are unbeatable,” he said. At the summit, the team put a sign in the snow that read “Jeep Parking Only – All Others Don’t Make It Up Here Anyway”.

I wonder if they had to put diesel engines in them to compensate for the high altitude, diesels don't lose any power as you get higher up.

That's 6k meters, not feet. In feet its over 20k feet, that's like the top of Mt. Everest, denver is about 30% as high as those jeeps went. And if I recall correctly the highest road pass in the US is in CO somewhere at 11k feet - so these guys are pretty high up there. It doesn't say anything about gas/diesel, but I don't think there'd be enough oxygen up there to get gas to burn.

Great, we go on setting world records for heights and speed. What else can mopar vehicles do except get good mileage. We need to start worrying about the environment and our national economy than the size of our car brands *.

MPG is a good goal to have, and there are plenty of organizations that strive for fuel economy but you need to realize that Mopar didn't make it's name on mpg, they made their name in places like Nascar with the charger smoking everyone and their brother. Chrysler is getting better fuel economy and I think you'll see quicker reactions to the market under the new ownership, but you have to give them time to deal with the way the germans ran things into the ground.

Why do you have to crap all over everything that chrysler does, unless they're making you a 50+ mpg car you're not going to be satisfied. Wish I could find out if they put diesels in those things. They'd almost have to, or at least put SC on the gasser to keep it from losing too much hp as they go up.

You lose about 3% per 1k feet up so they'd be running at 40% of max HP in a gas engine. They could probably do it with a gasser that had enough hp, those wranglers don't weigh all that much.

They're still at least 3k lbs and they're driving around in crazy terrain. I don't see how a gasser would make it unless they put the viper engine under the hood.

You don't need a ton of HP, with the right gearing you could get those jeeps moving with just a few HP. I could pull a 747 with my lawn mower with the right gears.

Good point. I have to tell all the toyota guys everytime they rag on the slow dodge that their truck is faster because they have 4.33 rear gears and the ads are showing them up against a dodge with 3.55 gears. It's dumb, the SRT 10 would smoke every one of them.

Its dumb and wasteful. You don't need to go fast, you should always select the lowest gear you can to get you the best mileage. The gearing in the transmission isn't something that you can change easily, but the axle gear is.

Careful with your terminology tinkerbell. You probably mean lowest numerical gear, but you said highest numerical gear. I'll be sure to go out and get some 4.56s in my truck.
