The avenger has a cvt in it (i think).  What does everyone here think of it?  When I found that out I figured it would have better mileage than the compass/caliber because it looks more aerodynamic.  Anyone know why it doesnt do better than 30 mpg?

With the smallest configuration the avenger is rated at 32, and it doesn't come with the cvt.

The avenger is a more powerful vehicle than the caliber.  More HP coming out of the engine = lower mileage.  Get that extra hp elsewhere and your mileage improves most of the time.

Luckily we don't have to damn the mileage.  I'm already getting 28 and I don't even have 2k miles on it Cool  Plus I have better HP than the caliber.

My stratus gets around 27 on the freeway.  You have more hp though, and an auto.  I'm driving around in a manual with 30% less hp than you speed.  Every year there seems to be improvements in HP, but mileage stays the same.  Guess you can't have both.

It would be nice to see if they could somehow make the mileage go up while keeping the HP the same.  And the HP hasn't gone up all that much, we've had cars with over 500 HP since the 60's, but our mpgs are up a lot since then.

The issue is all the extra safety features and comfort features, along with emissions regulations.  Your catalytic converter eats 20% of your mpgs pretty easily, makes sense to produce less co2 per gallon used but cause your car to use more gallons per mile huh???
