4.56s are available for the dakota so I'd assume that the durango can get the same ones.

I thought they were only available for the dakota rear but not front so if it was 4wd yer out of luck?

There's a few Dakota guys on other forums that are running with 4.56 gears in both the front and rear.

4.56s in a dak is insane.  The V8 dak is already fast, how much faster do you want to go?

Some people just have a need for speed.  There are guys with 4.80 or 5.33 in their rams, that's pretty nuts too.

I've thought about going to 4.56s for my truck.  It would help a bit with towing and a lot with mileage I hear, can anyone confirm this?  Also, if I did that how much would it cost?

It depends, some people note gains of 2-3 mpg, others say they lose mpg.  I think it depends on how fast you drive.  Typically the people seeing an increase in mileage see it in city driving (this is believable since it's easier to get the truck moving).  The cost can be anywhere from 300-500$ per axle.  Make sure you go to a shop that's done this before.

The 4.56 gears put your engine closer to it's peak torque output making it more efficient at the same speeds.  I think that the 70 mph mark is the point at which the higher RPMs don't make up for the added wind resistance.

Interesting, I think I have the 3.55 gears in my truck but I don't know for sure.  If I have the 3.92s would it be worth the $$ to go to 4.56s?  I didn't even worry about pulling the camper the first time, the tranny didn't search for gears that often, plus it's real flat where I am.  But the camper will weigh a bit more with water and other stuff.

Probably not, unless you are wheeling taller tires - taller than 31 inches that is - I wouldn't bother with the 4.56 if you already have 3.92.

I just called the dealer and they said that I have the 3.73 gears.  So now I think it's not worth it to go to 4.10s but maybe up to 4.56s.  Certainly not worth it to go to 3.92s.

dealers are idiots.  The 1500s don't come from the factory with 3.73, the choices are 3.55 and 3.92.

I'd call up chrysler with your VIN.  I don't think that 3.92s were available in 02 but maybe.  It's unlikely that you have 3.73s though, those are reserved for the HD trucks.

Dealers are idiots, you can't trust any one of them with anything really.  Not the techs, not the salesman, and certainly not the managers.

That's not news to anyone (I hope).  Dealers make their $$ on volume and overcharging.  If yer gonna have work done on the truck take it to a shop that make their $$ on their reputation.  Not every local shop is good, but if you ask around you'll find one.

I never thought about that.  But it's true, every dealer I've gone to has been a high volume dealer that basically puts you on the chopping block as far as customer service and quality goes.
