Auburn Hills, Mich., Dec 18, 2007  -  “We commend the Congress for passing an energy bill today and we fully support it being signed into law. Chrysler is committed to meeting the fuel economy standards of the bill – and doing our part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and our country’s reliance on foreign oil. We continue to devote significant resources to develop quality, fuel efficient products that our customers expect. This year alone, we offer six vehicles that get 28 miles per gallon or better, and more are on the way.”

Good for them, it's about time some of the automakers started working towards better mileage instead of fighting it.

x2, We should all be driving either fuel cell powered or battery powered vehicles by now.

We'll be there in 20 years.  GM plans on having 1 million fuel cell vehicles on the road in 6 years.  Other companies will follow.

That's good news, they'll be half way there when the new Cummins engines get going and people can buy work trucks with a reliable engine that gets 25 mpg.  That'll be huge.

I wonder if ferd/gm have a plan for this as well?  They must know that the standards increase is going to force them to put a mid 20s truck on the road.  Or are they planning on putting cars on the road that get 65 mpg to offset the trucks at 15 mpg?

I've heard of both GM/Ford using smaller V8 duramax/navistar engines in their 1/2 tons.  It's especially important for ford to get the mileage up since the f150 is their best selling vehicle and they sell a lot of em.

I hope dodge can be the first to have diesel in their 1/2 ton and actually have it work right the first time.  We need to be first to the table with something that gets good mileage.

I think they will.  It will (I think) be one of the engines offered with the 09 ram.  GM and Ford are still just talking about getting theirs.

I wonder if this means that the challenger will be in production up to 2019 and then stopped after that.

My bet is that chrysler will have a 35 mpg 350-450 hp hemi by then so don't worry about it.  If nothing else they could probably put the V6 cummins in it (yeah I know it wouldn't be as fast) and it would get probably close to 40 mpg then.  You're options might not include a 550 hp version though.

By 2019 chrysler will have a fuel cell car on the road that uses no oil so meeting the cafe standard won't be hard.  They will still offer some cars with gasoline, but most by then will be fuel cell driven.

That's pretty optimistic so say that in 12 years we'll all be driving completely different vehicles.  I'd say by then that hybrids will be the norm, and diesels, but fuel cell vehicles will be another few years off of that.
