Jeep Renegade Concept Technology
The advanced propulsion system in the Jeep Renegade concept starts with a 40-mile lithium-ion battery pack. A range extender – in Renegade’s case, a small-displacement (1.5-liter, 3-cylinder) BLUETEC diesel engine – allows for journeys beyond 40 miles. In fact, the Jeep Renegade concept boasts a 400-mile range.

Renegade’s BLUETEC diesel engine generates an additional 115 horsepower when needed, while greatly reducing exhaust emissions when compared to standard gasoline engines. Renegade is capable of achieving an equivalent petroleum fuel economy of 110 miles per gallon, which is four-to-five times greater than an equivalent gasoline-only vehicle.

The all-new Jeep Renegade concept’s lightweight aluminum architecture and regen-braking system help to improve overall efficiency, while dual electric 200 kilowatt (268 horsepower) motors propel a very capable 4x4 system – complete with low range and locking differentials -- worthy of carrying the Jeep name.

This is what we should have on the road right now.  Other than the lack of a roof this vehicle would be very attractive to me.  It's capable 4x4 and gets 110 mpg on diesel.  If we could get all our vehicles to run on diesel and be getting great mpg out of them we wouldn't need much foreign oil.  We can get a lot biodiesel out of our farmland to supplement our oil needs.  Stuff like this needs to grow.

This is how train engines have been built for the past 15 years minus the batteries (though I've heard that new engines are made with batteries to regain power from braking).  It's a wonder why it took so long for a car company to put it in a vehicle.

That would be nice, I'd love to be at peak torque in the first second of throttle.

THIS THIS THIS!!!  If this powertrain has been in diesel engines for 20 years why not have it in cars???  I've seen high school kids make kit cars that run like this and get prizes.  This kind of vehicle should have been in the works years ago so that we can buy it today.

Wow that would be nice.  They'd need to put a roof on it but that concept looks real attractive to me right now.

I like the idea of this, but what's wrong with the other two concepts chrysler had out there???  The one was powered by only batteries, using zero gallons per mile is better than using 1 gallon per 110 miles.

The other two don't have a proven drivetrain.  This one, if made street safe, has a drivetrain that's been used in trains for years now.  It also doesn't require that you stop and plug in your car for extended periods of time since it uses a diesel engine to power the electric motor.

We've been doing this in trains for years???  You learn something new every day I guess, if that's the case then we should be using trains for more and more stuff.

The other two do have a proven drivetrain.  Many vehicles today are powered by electric motors.  How that electric motor gets it's power doesn't matter.  If they get their power from batteries only then all the better, the sooner we get off of oil the better off we'll be.

That's a sharp lookin jeep.  I'd love to have a vehicle that wasn't propelled by an ICE and instead used an electric motor.  While I think it's important to reduce our reliance on oil and clean up the air I don't put a lot of hope in something like this making it to market in the next 15 years.  We might have one in 2030, but this kind of thing is mostly lip service for those of us that want better mpg and cleaner cars.

I hope not.  I love my truck and my Hemi, I would love to have gas powered vehicles til the day I die.  But I want all the smaller vehicles to be run on air or electricity or some other magical thing so that gas gets cheap again Grin  I'm sure I'll own an electric vehicle someday but my hemi will always have a place with me.
