How the hemi are you?

« on: May 12, 2008 »

I almost get giddy reading this:

Quote
Steve Saleen and his new company SMS introduced today the first product in his line of Signature Series ultra-high performance vehicles, the SMS 570TM Challenger and SMS 570XTM Challenger.

As a professional racecar driver and innovative businessman, Mr. Saleen is well known as the founder of a number of Steve Saleen brands including Saleen Autosport, Saleen Productions, Saleen Speedlab, Saleen Performance, Saleen, Inc. and now SMS. Mr. Saleen‘s latest endeavor will focus on the expansion into the high-end of the diverse American Muscle Car markets.

The fully certified and street legal SMS 570TM Challenger and SMS 570XTM Challenger will be based on the 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T and will feature a SMS Supercharged 5.7L Hemi with respective power ratings from 500 to over 700 horsepower. Both models are equipped with SMS high performance components including drivetrain, suspension, aerodynamics, tires, wheels and interior.

“The horsepower and torque that we are developing from the SMS Supercharged Hemi is phenomenal” said Billy Tally, SMS Chief Technical Officer, “combined with suspension and braking improvements our SMS Challenger will be an incredibly capable, refined and tractable vehicle”.

Each of these limited edition vehicles will be personally signed by Steve Saleen as part of the SMS Signature Series product line complete with unique badges and graphics. Production numbers will be limited per year depending on the model and the opportunity to be one of the few owners is limited to a first-come, first-served basis.

I do definately drool reading this.

O boy, it's about time saleen decided to make a chrysler car more awesomer.  Though I suppose they only want to be associated with cool as hell cars and the charger doesn't quite make the cut.

I think this makes Dodge one of the premier brands out there.  The Challenger is an awesome vehicle and Steve Saleen will only make it better.

Dodge already is one of the premier brands.  No one else out there makes a racing version of every one of their vehicles.  I think saleen would have taken the 2 door Ram SRT 10 and done a bit with it but Dodge discontinued it.  He probably only wants to be associated with super fast and super cool cars which is why he's picking up the challenger but not the charger.  Now I just wish Chrysler would stop diluting the SRT brand by making an SRT version of jeep/chrysler vehicles.

I wouldn't say premier since not every version of a Dodge is exciting.  In fact, many versions have been lackluster and leave a lot to be desired.  I hope that the future of Dodge and Chrysler is looking up with better quality and better mpg.

The history of Dodge is well known among all auto enthusiasts.  The hemi smoked everyone and their brother on the nascar circuit back in 70.  Nascar had to regulate the hemi off the road which is lame.

haha, he only does sporty cars that could be used for the strip.  He wouldn't ever do a 4x4 or anything else that wasn't rear wheel drive.

x2, the history of Saleen is well known.  He would've done all the Chrysler muscle cars back in the 70s, and he's not going to do the charger because it has 4 doors.  The challenger is the first dodge product that he can do and keep his reputation.

Holy crap: I'm sad.  I fully understand you all like performace additions to the Challenger, but did you look at the car?
It's a Mustang front end - yuck !  I want my Challenger, but I want my Mopar, not a Fopar.
Check out this months car and driver and Sam Poseys endorsement of another company, Group 5 anf their Challenger.

I just looked it up, I don't think it looks too bad but you do have a point.  The front end of the saleen challenger does look a lot like their mustangs, maybe they're trying to go for a uniform look so that everyone can easily recognise a saleen car.

I hadn't heard about sam posey and his G5 challenger, it does indeed look pretty sweet Cool

That's pretty cool to see 2 big names in the industry taking the challenger and making a specific model for their high performance line.  It says something about the car when people use it as a base for something they put their name behind.

Wish we could get some custom wranglers like you guys get race cars.  Then again I guess there's really no huge rock crawling competitions out there with big names to back them up.
