Hey guys,  I'm looking at buying a used 2006 Ram.  The dealer says is has an offroad package and that it's got some other great features.  I noticed that I has offroad tires, the interior is immaculate and awesome.  I have no issues there.  But the bed of the truck is really scratched up, like everywhere.  It also has some rust spots.  Can anyone tell me what the deal is with that???  Why would someone treat the bed of their truck like that, and if they did is there a good chance that they treated the rest of the truck that way too?  Basically I'm wondering what kinds of things I need to watch out for when looking at one of these things.

It depends on the direction of the scratches, If they're ala relatively in the same direction probably means that the original didn't use a truck bed liner.  If the scratches are in a lot of different directions there is a good chance that the original owner did have a liner in the truck and now the dealership going to try and sell it to you without the liner and even try to use it as a bargaining chip.  Dealers have a saying "as is".  They'll use that in order to justify the price of the vehicle.  If you do buy that truck and decide to use a drop-in liner water will still get underneath and continue to eat away at the bed.  Your best option, and probably only, is to have the bed scoured out and have a spray in liner put in.  A spray in liner, a good one, will cost between $500-$600.  Who ever is trying to sell you that truck ought to drop it by that much before you even consider buying it.

x2, I've seen some work trucks that had the drop in bed liners in them for years.  One of the bed liners had a deep gouge that turned into a tear (they're just thick plastic) that they eventually replaced.  When the liner was taken out you were lucky to spot any of the original paint color.  I was surprised the bed still held as much weight as it did since it was so damn rusted.

If the bed is really messed up theres two possibilities.  They either had a bed liner in it, cutter and mega explain that well.  Or they did use it a lot for work in which case there's a good chance they used it to haul a lot of stuff often.  The rust in the bed is a bit premature, my truck is 6 years old and has no rust (does have a few scratches though).  I use it a lot but I put down a rubber mat first.

If it were me I'd keep looking around.  If the truck is a great deal then it's a great deal.  But right now Rams are not in high demand.  No one is buying trucks these days so I think you would be able to get a better deal on a truck that's out there.  I'm sure there's one in your area being sold buy a dealer that actually wants to sell it.

If the bed is the only issue I say go for it.  Trucks are meant to be used as trucks and as such the beds of the truck will take a beating.  No sense in harping on something that's normal wear and tear.  If the rest of the truck checks out for you then take it.

I'd say scratches in the bed are pretty normal, I wouldn't worry about them too much.  It's easy for someone to put a load in the bed just a couple times and scratch it all to hell.  It doesn't mean he treated the truck like crap or he treated it like a baby.

Same here, I practically have to get the whole bed repainted every year so my truck doesn't rust out.
