So I'm planning to buy my first dodge ram and I've been working with a car dealership.  It's a used 06' with 36,000 miles on it.  Included is the TRX off-road package, the towing package, mopar rails, the 5.7L Hemi and they're going to give me 1yr unlimited mile bumper to bumper warranty.  Originally they wanted 19,995 but we've been able to talk them down to 15,900 with my trade,  My friend, who's a major ram enthusiast, wants me to tell the guy to go suck a bag of dicks over a spot of rust in the truck bed and no towing mirrors.  Should I tell them to f-off and trust my friend or should I just take their offer?

I don't know if I would tell them to suck a bag of dicks, that might not earn you any brownie points with the salesman.  Getting 3k off of a vehicles seems like a pretty good deal.  How much do you think your trade in is worth?  If it's not much then I'd be tempted.  But, I'd also check around.  I went to three different dealerships when I went looking for my truck and ended up playing two of them off of each other (I almost just had each salesman call the other and see if they could beat each other LOL).

At each dealership I would get a print out of the vehicle and then a price in writing and then I would just stroll 30 miles down to the other dealer and say 'hey, you guys have a truck that's similar - can you beat this price?'  If they know you have options and are willing to walk then they come down.  I got my truck down 4k from the asking price, it wasn't everything that I wanted exactly, but that's part of the fun.  When you don't get the things you want you can go aftermarket and get better stuff - so be prepared to spend some coin Grin

You need to make sure you're getting fair value for your trade in.  Dealerships are great at telling small white lies that make it sound like your getting the best possible deal in the world and they're losing money on it just to move the vehicle.  That might happen once or twice with a customer that has bought a lot of vehicles from the dealer, but I don't know anyone that's been that lucky.

If I were you I'd slow down and take a deep breath.  Can you still drive your current vehicle for another few weeks???  If you answered yes then there's no reason to not keep looking for a truck.  Trucks are not exactly flying off the lots these days, it'll still be there two weeks from now.  You should try to find a similar truck and work the dealers against each other.  I did that when I was first looking, took some advice from this site and got the dealer to take 2k off his asking price.  Of course that was back when gas was still 2.50 a gallon and trucks were popular, the deals out today should be at least twice as good.

That's tough to do.  What if he needs to get new tires or brakes.  Some things you could drive on for months but you wouldn't want to.  I can certainly understand his desire to get into a new vehicle, and the Ram looks pretty darn good.  The prices are great too for year and mileage on it.

It might be tough to do, but unless you want to just give the dealer money that's what you have to do.  Most dealers lie and lie and then lie some more to make you think they're getting the worst deal and you're making them lose money with the purchase/trade in.

I say just buy the truck already.  Getting them down from 20 to 16 is a pretty big swing.  The only way to get it cheaper is to go to auction.

Well no more worries from me, i bought it.  3.92 gears, 17" wheels with 33" tires, this thing is a beast in my garage. only thing to do now is add some accessories.  Linex Liner, Econo cover, and maybe some road armor, hope this pic shows up.

Congradulations on the purchase, though it sounds like you could have held out for more.  At least you got what you want and that's the most important thing.  Also, we need pics.

Good for you getting a new (to you) vehicle, welcome to the world of mopar.  Bad for you for getting a vehicle that gets terrible mileage with the way our economy is sinking due to gas prices and the plethora of alternatives for better mpg on the market.
