Chrysler LLC’s Jeep® brand has a solution for sport-utility vehicle (SUV) customers seeking relief from high gas prices and economic uncertainty – the Jeep Patriot. A study by Edmunds.com reveals that the Jeep Patriot is the least expensive SUV to own at 48.6 cents per mile.

Quote
“In difficult periods like this, it is vital that we continue to evolve our products to exceed customers’ needs and Jeep Patriot does just that,” said Robert Hegbloom, Senior Manager – Jeep Brand Marketing. “By providing great fuel economy, performance, handling and flexibility, all at an affordable price, the Jeep Patriot is a tremendous value.”

The number one ranking is based on Edmunds.com’s True Cost to Own data, which incorporates projected model-specific average vehicle ownership costs consisting of depreciation, financing, taxes, fees, insurance premiums, fuel costs, maintenance and repairs. The data accounts for total vehicle costs over a five-year period.

Quote
“Even though gas prices are high, some consumers are still in search of a sport-utility vehicle to meet their needs,” said Jesse Toprak, Executive Director of Industry Analysis, Edmunds.com. “For those consumers, vehicles like the Jeep Patriot are relative bargains in their segment.”

The Jeep Patriot continues to gain traction in the marketplace with total U.S. sales in July up 4 percent versus the same period last year. Additionally, Jeep Patriot 2008 year-to-date sales increased 119 percent, with 40,135 total sales when compared with July 2007 year-to-date sales.

The patriot looks big in pictures, like the old cherokee, but in person the thing is as small as the compass.  No wonder it's the cheapest 'SUV' to own Grin

It might not be an SUV but as far as the Jeep brand goes, it's probably one of the better jeeps.  When you go offroading the smaller the vehicle the better.

I can attest to that.  The last time the guys wanted to hit a trail I took my wifes Nitro instead of the Ram.  The nitro is smaller and has about the same power to weight ratio so I'm not really down any offroading capabilities.

It doesn't surprise me.  You can get a model that gets 25 mpg and is trail rated.  Jeep takes that badge seriously, for it to be trail rated means that it can go where most vehicles can't.  It's not going to be as good as the wrangler or the grand cherokee but it'll be damn good.

I actually like the look of the patriot.  If I were to trim the jeep line it would be: wrangler/patriot/cherokee/grand cherokee

That's about right, but the Patriot could replace the cherokee in that line up.  It's not as good as a cherokee offroad but it certainly looks the part.

That's what I like about it.  I drive my truck around all day and it's tough to get into spaces half the time.  I would get a patriot if I had the extra cash to save on mpg and getting into spaces easier.  Then I could just use my truck for work and not worry about mileage so much.

I agree, I've been thinking of jacking up my wrangler to basically make it offroad only but then I'd need another vehicle as my daily driver.  The only reason I don't is because I think I'd miss driving my baby on a daily basis.

The patriot is about the size of my car.  I wonder what makes the patriot an suv and my car a hatchback.  If the compass isn't a hatchback then I don't know what to say.  Either way it looks like a good little vehicle, I'd buy one if I didn't already have my caliber.

If chrysler considers the compass a suv then they need to throw in the towel.  The compass aint no suv.  The durango, the liberty, the nitro, the grand cherokee are all SUVs.  The patriot passes for an SUV but really it's a jacked up station wagon.

The patriot sits a lot taller than the caliber.  I've seen both side by side.  The caliber looks better imo, but the patriot is an SUV there's no mistaking that.  It has ground clearance to get over a lot of things that the caliber wouldn't.  I don't know what chrysler considers the compass.  It is a hatchback in my opinion, I don't even know if you can get a trail rated one.

I don't think anyone mistakes the caliber or the compass for an suv.  Our nitro has some grunt, can tow, and can do some 4 wheeling.  The patriot doesn't sit too much lower than the nitro (aren't they made on the same chassis?) so I'd think it would be hard to mistake the two.

NO ONE mistakes the compass for any real jeep.  It's a frakking disgrace to have it in the line up.  It's also a disgrace to have so many vehicles in the line up, but that's what diamler wanted I guess.

x2 The compass is selling well overseas is the only reason it's still around.  I think they should just kill it in the american markets though.
