The new GM vehicles have their problems, the fords shoot flames out of their tailpipes. I think the only engine that could compete against the reliability and power of the cummins is a cat. The heavy duty tundras might get those too, that would be interesting. Too bad they'd be ugly as sin

You may be right about the reliability. But in terms of speed and performance a bombed dmax will beat a cummins most of the time. So the cummins can last 500k miles and the dmax only 250k, try getting your truck that's built around the engine to last that long. The average consumer doesn't need the vehicle for that long.

Both engines are good, and raman is right about the average consumer not needing the engine for more than a few hundred thousand miles. But, many average consumers buy that engine because they want to tow a big camper or some kind of toy hauler. If the engine heats up like that on the road and the engine limps there's a problem. GM needs to fix that problem, after all there's no reason that the 'superior' GM shouldn't be able to overtake that mid 90s cummins.

Some people do have blind loyalty. Instead of saying that the dmax is superior (when it's obviously not in that case) he should be saying wtf is cummins doing that Izuzu (they make the dmax) isn't.

To be fair cummins and izuzu aren't responsible for cooling the engine. There was probably a defect in the coolant system that got into many GM trucks (or they didn't test it against a load like they should've). Needless to say that dodge can't get away with stuff like that or cummins would drop them and dodge can't afford to deal with that.

I'd bet a hemi powered chassis cab would dog as much as the dmax did with that weight. Hell I've pulled over 7k lbs and the truck didn't even know it was back there.

While you may be right remember its the cooling system of the engine here that's failing, not the engine. A dmax would outpull hemi every day of the week.

This is what really matters. Engines aside, if the trucks coolant system is failing to keep the engine cool enough to run safely then the truck isn't worth much. The fact that GM refuses to fix the problem makes it worse. We know that if chrysler was having a problem cooling the cummins engines then cummins would drop chrysler and all the truck owners would go to where ever cummins went.
