I don't see either SUV going away.  The new management will find a way to make them both profitable.  And they'll be cheaper in the future too Tongue

I could see the Nitro going away, who has use for a small suv when they could buy a station wagon (what a small suv really is anyways) and get much better mpg in this economy.  The durango has some use since it can haul a ton, but the nitro doesn't do much.

The nitro is the obvious thing to get axed.  Jeep is keeping the patriot so no need to keep the liberty and w/o the liberty the nitro is not profitable.

How do you know that jeep is going to keep the patriot?  It and the compass aren't very worthy of the brand name and Jim Press just said that jeep is going back to it's offroading roots.

Good, I like the size of the patriot better, and the Nitro is ugly as sin.  The person that designed that needs to go work on something else.

Almost all jeeps should be exterminated.  The jeep brand of the 90s was the best ever imo.  They had only a few vehicles in the line up and all of them were excellent offroaders.  None of this well it's pretty much just another suv thing.

These prices mean that I can get more vehicle for the same money.  I like it, I hope they aren't cutting into margins to make it upscale as it is.

I doubt people are trading in their trucks to buy chargers.  Why not just wait another year to get a challenger?  Most people would lose 5-10 grand on a truck trade in, they're not going to do that just to save 30 bucks at the pump.

The people doing this aren't thinking rationally for the most part.  Plus they might need 4 doors, plus they might not want to buy a brand new vehicle.  Yes they lose 10 grand on the truck when they trade it in, but they only increase their monthly payment by 50$ or whatever to get a used charger.  In return their pain at the pump is a few $s less.  I don't think it evens out for most of them but the pain at the pump is what they need to address.

If a person is going to take a 15k hit just to save 35$ at the pump then I hope they go bankrupt.  Losing that kind of money puts you in debt for years and years and years.  By then gas will be cheap again.

I agree Raman.  I could trade my truck in right now but I'd take a huge hit on it and I would only save about 60$ per tank.  That adds up but it doesn't add up to the 15k that I would lose on the truck plus I would lose out on the fun of driving it.

60$ per tank can add up to a lot of money for some people.  I think beyond that though it could be a combination of less pain at the pump and not wanting your neighbor to sneer at you.  If you don't drive a car these days people will sit there and mock you.

I'd love to trade my truck in for a charger or a challenger that got better mpg.  I own mine outright so I wouldn't take a hit but you guys are right.  There's no great reason to trade it in.  I'm just concentrating on using the truck less, we take my wifes nitro out whenever we can.  We also have been making an effort to drive less miles per month.  That helps a lot.

That's about the most sane thing any car owner has ever said that I've ever read.  You're right too, when you look at it in a total net worth idea you get a better understanding of how everything affects you and how it'll work out in the long run.  Good advice.

Hey now, sane things don't go over very well around these parts Grin  We don't need that kind of talk here.

Yeah, even though it's not the sane thing to do I'm jonsing pretty hard for a challenger right now.  I know I can't get rid of the truck because we have the camper so I'd have to keep it.  I own it outright so that makes buying the car easier, but I'm also saving up for a new truck.  I want to get a 2010 half ton diesel.  I know I wouldn't be able to do that.  And I know my truck won't last another 5 years while I pay the challenger off to be able to buy a new truck.  Plus I want to put 75% down on the new truck.
